What is nappy rash?
A patchwork of inflamed, bright red skin on the buttocks. Nappy rash is linked to wet or infrequently changed nappies, diarrhoea, new foods and antibiotics. The main symptom is a red rash on the buttocks. In severe cases, symptoms such as fever and widespread rash can occur.
When is nappy rash more likely to occur?
Nappy rash can happen at any time and there may be no obvious reason as some babies naturally have more sensitive skin and therefore may be more prone to the condition. There are however certain times when babies may be especially susceptible to nappy rash. Such as during teething, when switching from breast to bottle feeding. Starting on solid foods. When drinking cow’s milk for the first time. Eating acidic foods such as citrus and tomatoes.
What does nappy rash look like?
Nappy rash normally starts with a slight redness in the nappy area. It tends not to affect the skin folds, areas such as the buttocks and upper thighs can become red and moist. Patches of dry, flaky skin may also develop.
How to prevent nappy rash?
Parents can help to reduce the chance of their child getting nappy rash by changing the baby’s nappy as soon as it becomes wet or soiled. By carefully washing the nappy area with warm water and cotton wool, gently patting dry, or using a fragrance free and an alcohol-free baby wipe. Letting the skin breath by planning to have the nappy off for an hour or so. Changing the baby’s nappy before putting them to sleep. Using a light application of Sudocrem with each cleanse and nappy change.
